Plastic Classic Boulder Competition

Citizen's Categories Entry Fee:

This includes Youth, Male Recreational, Female Recreational, Male Advanced, and Female Advanced categories.

• $28 for Granite Arch Members
• $35 for Non-Members and Punch Card Holders

Open Categories Entry Fee:

This includes Male Open and Female Open categories.

• $31 for Granite Arch Members
• $38 for Non-Members and Punch Card Holders

Refunds

Refunds will not be provided under the following circumstances:

• The participant cancels less than 24 hours before the competition start time.
• The participant touches or climbs the boulders intended for the bouldering competition before the competition.
• The participant "no-shows" on the day of the competition.
• The participant intentionally breaks Granite Arch Climbing Center's Rules and Recommendations and/or the rules of the bouldering competition.

Granite Arch reserves the right to cancel or reschedule an event at any time, for any reason. A full refund or credit will be issued if Granite Arch cancels an event.

Competitor Categories

Climbers must self-select their category. Final placement may be reviewed by Granite Arch Management based on performance. In other words, participants may be moved to a category not chosen by the participant depending on their performance.

 

Competition Rules

1. General Information

Event Format: This is a recreational and competitive bouldering event. Climbers will compete in designated categories based on gender and skill level.

Categories:

• Youth (all skill levels, ages 14 and younger)
• Female Recreational (V0-V4)
• Male Recreational (V0-V4)
• Female Advanced (V5+)
• Male Advanced (V5+)
• Female Open
• Male Open

Scoring Format: Redpoint (with encore points– see Section 2.5).

Waivers: All participants must sign a liability waiver before competing.

Climbing Shoes: Required for all participants.

Timing: Climbers will have 3 hours to climb as many boulders as they would like.

2. Competition Rules

2.1. General Conduct

• Climbers must respect other participants, spectators, and staff.
• Unsportsmanlike behavior, intentional rule-breaking, or interference with another climber’s attempts may result in disqualification.
• Registered competitors and staff are allowed on the climbing mats during the competition. Spectators are also allowed on the mats, but competitors will be given priority if the boulder room becomes too full.

2.2. Problem Attempts

• Each problem is assigned a point value based on its difficulty.
• Climbers may attempt problems as many times as they would like.
• Points are only awarded for successful completions, as determined by the rules for topping a problem.
• Each failed attempt removes points from your score for that problem.

2.3. Starting a Problem

• Climbers must begin with both hands in the designated start position, as indicated by tape or signage. Feet must be off the ground before continuing the problem.
• Naturals (including aretes on concrete walls) are always off for hands and on for feet unless otherwise marked. Aretes on wooden walls are on for hands and feet.
• If the start is not clearly defined, ask a staff member for clarification.

2.4. Finishing a Problem

• A problem is successfully completed when the climber:
  • Controls the designated finishing hold(s) with both hands.
  • Does not use any off-limits holds or features (marked by tape or signage).

2.5. Scoring

• Climbers are responsible for recording their own scores and obtaining another participant's initials in the space provided after each successful attempt.
• Points are awarded based on the 5 highest-value problems completed during the competition. If a competitor does not complete 5 problems, their total score will be calculated using their total number of problems completed.
• Encore points: a competitor is awarded additional points for repeating a problem that they have already completed on the following attempt only (For example, if you complete problem #10, you are awarded 1000 points. If you repeat problem #10 on the next attempt, you will receive an additional 100 points).
• In case of ties that include podium standings (1st, 2nd, and 3rd), the following criteria will be used to determine rankings:
  • Total number of completed problems.
  • Total number of attempts.
  • A rock, paper, scissors match (best two out of three)
• In the event of ties that do not include podium standings, there will be no determining criteria and the tie will stand.

2.6. Risk Management and Fair Play

• Participants must yield to climbers already on a problem and avoid creating distractions.
• Do not alter holds or routes in any way.
• If a hold spins, breaks, or is changed in any way during a participant's attempt, that attempt will become void. If the participant is not affected by the spinner or broken hold and climbs past the spinner or broken hold on that same attempt, no score change or attempt void is necessary.

3. Judging and Appeals

• Any disputes must be raised with the Staff Manager, Head Routesetter, or Owner within 15 minutes of the competition’s conclusion.

4. Awards and Prizes

• CASH PRIZES
  • $150 awarded to the 1st place winner of Male and Female Open categories
  • $75 awarded to the 2nd place winner of Male and Female Open categories
  • $50 awarded to the 3rd place winner of Male and Female Open categories as well as the 1st place winner of Male and Female Advanced categories
• OTHER PRIZES
  • Trophies, shirts, and/or gear from our sponsors and Granite Arch will be awarded to the top 3 climbers in each category.
• In the event of a tie, the tie-breaking criteria outlined in section 2.5 will apply.

5. Additional Notes

• All participants must adhere to gym rules and regulations outside the competition-specific rules.
• Any changes to the schedule or rules will be announced before the start of the event via email, social media, announcement in the gym, or a combination of these three.
