Climbing Photography Clinic

Students will learn to capture compelling climbing images that convey movement, exposure, and the relationship between climber and rock, while understanding the technical and safety demands unique to shooting in vertical environments.

Key Topics

• Composition specific to climbing — using rock features as leading lines, showing scale and exposure, framing the climber against negative space, capturing key moments (crux moves, clips, summits)
• Lighting — working with harsh midday sun, golden hour on rock faces, backlighting silhouettes, fill flash for shaded routes
• Gear and positioning — shooting from above (jugging a fixed line), from the ground, or from an adjacent formation; lens choices for tight cliff bands vs. wide exposure shots
• Storytelling — building a narrative sequence (approach, climb, summit) rather than isolated shots
